Income Taxes

The Commissioner of the Revenue’s office is responsible for screening and processing Virginia state income tax returns for all citizens of Alleghany County. Returns are checked for errors and/or missing information. When errors are found, the taxpayer is notified by letter or by phone so that they may correct their return before it is sent to the Department of Taxation in Richmond. Accelerated refund returns are keyed daily in our office to ensure speedy refunds for the taxpayers. Accelerated refunds are available to taxpayers whose address and filing status remain the same as the previous year.

Forms

State and federal tax forms are available in the Commissioner’s office. The following web sites are available online if you would prefer to download forms:
www.irs.gov
www.tax.virginia.gov

State Income Tax Preparation

Staff in the Commissioner’s office will assist you in filling out your individual state tax return. There is no charge for this service. All that you have to do is bring in a complete copy of your federal tax return along with all income statements (W-2's, 1099's, etc).

Accelerated Refunds

Accelerated refunds are keyed online with the Department of Taxation by the Commissioner's office on a daily basis. This enables taxpayers to get their refunds back in a few days time. Refunds that are not accelerated are mailed directly to the Department of Taxation. These refunds normally take around 4 to 6 weeks to receive.

Balance Due Returns

If you owe state income taxes, you may pay those locally when you file your return locally.  The payment is forwarded to the county treasurer who transmits it to the state.

State Estimated Payments

Initial state estimated payments made by Alleghany County taxpayers are processed in the Commissioner's office. The remaining 3 estimated payments are made in the Alleghany County Treasurer's office.

Checking the Status of a Return

If you would like to check on the status of your return, you can call us at 540-863-6640 and we will go online with the Department of Taxation and do this for you. You can also go online with the Department of Taxation at the website www.tax.virginia.gov and check the status of your return. If you wish to speak directly with the Department of Taxation, the number is: 804-367-8031.

Federal Income Tax Preparation

The Alleghany County Commissioner of the Revenue’s office is an official VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) site for qualifying filers.  For tax year 2015, if your total household income is $54,000 or less, you may qualify for free federal income tax preparation, including free e-file.  We begin filing in mid-January and you must call us at 863-6640 for an appointment.
